CLAUDE A. BARNETT!

DIPLOMAT

FOUNDER of THE ASSOCIATED NEGRO PRESS

AMBASSADOR

This family has a rich history in Chicago! Before we touch on their important contributions to society, here are a few tidbits of love from folks around the globe.

“When we were children, we would play up and down the streets of what was then South Parkway Blvd. Us children were fascinated by Ms Barnett! She was always so kind to us. Her voice was light and lyrical. It sounded as if she was singing our names. When she would wave and beckon us over for cookies, we took off like a rocket! The stacked bracelets on her arms jangled sweetly in the breeze like a windchime. We sat in awe as she regaled us with stories of travel to other countries. Ms Barnett was never judgmental toward us neighborhood children. We smelled of outdoors from playing in the summer air all day. She would bring out cold sweet drinks or spray us with the water hose when she was done gardening in the front yard. Something was always going on in that regal home on the boulevard. Dignitaries, politicians, Drs, celebrities, neighbors, sororities, fraternities, A. Philip Randolph, Lerone Bennett, John Sengstacke, John Johnson, Dr Burroughs… We saw so many important people visit their home. But most of all i remember her sweet smell. She smelled sooo good! Miss her. Looking forward to attending this sale!”~Maybeth

Etta Moten Barnett was elegant and refined. She had a melodious voice and a wicked sense of humor! She was always well dressed, wore high heels into her 80’s–some say up until age 92. When you were with her, you were the most important person in the room! She was curious and listened to what you had to say. Just seeing her live her life to the fullest was an inspiration.

CLAUDE A BARNETT FOUNDER of the ASSOCIATED NEGRO PRESS

Mr. Claude A. Barnett founded the Associated Negro Press in 1919! The ANP provided newspapers across the world with a critical, important, full coverage look at celebs, politicians, common folk, institutions across the globe! Yes, Mr Claude was known in todays language as “the plug.” The connector. It’s common knowledge that there would be no Etta Moten Barnett, stage and screen star, without Mr Claude! Now don’t get it twisted, Ms Etta definitely had talent, style and wits along with a face that would make grown MARRIED men profess their undying love. (See above, Mr. Sidney Poitiers public love letter to Ms Etta Barnett.)

(Pictured L-R, Etta Moten Barnett & Claude Albert Barnett)

But it was Claude A. Barnett that had the vision and the connections! In the early 1920’s Mr. Claude met Mr. Clarence Muse (Casablanca, Car Wash, Porgy & Bess) and Etta Motens career took off! Check out his swagger! Can you see his confidence? Don’t miss the ON SITE shopping premiere of “An American Love Story,” staring Etta Moten Barnett and Claude A Barnett, 9/18/21-9/19/21 from 9a-3pm.
